  19. The news.announce hierarchy contains the seven moderated newsgroups
  20. news.announce.important, news.announce.newgroups,
  21. news.admin.technical, news.announce.newusers, news.answers, news.lists
  22. and news.announce.conferences.
  23.  
  24. "news.announce.important" is a newsgroup for just what it says it is --
  25. important announcements.  It is intended to be read by everyone on
  26. Usenet, although nobody is forced to subscribe.  To post to
  27. news.announce.important, send mail to the moderator at
  28. "announce@stargate.com".  Some netnews implementations will
  29. automatically mail to the moderator anything posted instead of
  30. attempting to post it directly.  If the message is appropriate, it will
  31. be posted by the moderator; if not, the moderator will suggest a more
  32. appropriate place to post it or a better way to go about the same
  33. goal.

  35. Discussions in news.announce.important are explicitly forbidden, and
  36. the volume of traffic will be kept low enough to keep people from
  37. feeling a need to unsubscribe.  Usenet administrators for each site
  38. should make a point of reading news.announce.important.
  39.  
  40. The current policy is that news.announce.important submissions must be:
  41.  
  42. (a) short - preferably they should fit on one crt screen, including headers.
  43. (b) important enough to at least have their header shown to everyone on the
  44.     net.  The posting should be more of benefit to the net than to the poster.
  45. (c) not posted to any other newsgroup - news.announce.important by itself is 
  46.     supposed to be sufficient to reach everybody, and nobody should have to
  47.     read an announcement more than once.
  48. (d) signed - the author should be clearly evident.
  49. (e) not commercial, political, or religious in nature.
  50.  
  51. news.announce.newgroups exists for announcements of either the
  52. creation or the consideration of a new newsgroup.  All calls for
  53. votes, calls for discussions, vote results, and creation notices of
  54. all hierarchies should be posted to news.announce.newgroups.
  55. Submissions should be directed to announce-newgroups@uunet.uu.net (or to
  56. your nearest major site).  Followups will be redirected to
  57. news.groups.

  59. news.admin.technical is a newsgroup for discussion about software.
  60. policies, and the technical aspects of running Usenet news.  Postings
  61. of a more general nature should be posted to the unmoderated group
  62. news.admin.misc instead.  
  63.  
  64. Some messages will be repeated every month, in order to reach all
  65. newcomers.  These messages will be placed in news.announce.newusers,
  66. which is also moderated.  This makes it safe for experienced users who
  67. have already read these messages to unsubscribe to
  68. news.announce.newusers without missing anything new in
  69. news.announce.important.  If you aren't familiar with the netnews
  70. guidelines in news.announce.newusers, please read them carefully.
  71. Your understanding of these rules will assure that you don't annoy the
  72. more than 3 million members of the net community (estimated) by
  73. unintentionally abusing the net, and will help you get more value from
  74. the net.  This group does not accept postings from users (although the
  75. moderator is usually willing to entertain suggestions for edits and
  76. additions to existing postings).

  78. Many newsgroups have postings that are made periodically for new users
  79. of those specific groups.  These postings are usually referred to as
  80. FAQs, or Frequently-Asked Questions.  The postings are usually
  81. cross-posted to the new.answers (and companion comp.answers,
  82. sci.answers, etc.)  newsgroup for purposes of archiving and
  83. consolidated searching.  Normally, users will not post articles here
  84. unless they have constructed a FAQ for a particular newsgroup.

  86. Several people make an on-going effort to collect administrative
  87. information and interesting statistics about the news.  This
  88. information, usually in the form of lists, is posted on a regular
  89. basis to the news.lists newsgroup.  This allows others interested in
  90. these topics (such as news flow, volume, valid newsgroup names, etc)
  91. to find them all in one particular place.  Again, this is not a group
  92. in which users will normally post, but they may find the information
  93. in the group to be of interest.

  95. news.announce.conference is for announcements of conference programs,
  96. calls for papers, and things of that kind.  Submissions should be
  97. directed to nac@sparky.sterling.com.  Please keep Subject lines
  98. informative; if space permits, mention the topic and location there,
  99. and avoid acronyms unless very widely known.
